James S. Gordon, MD, President

Dr. Gordon is the founder and director of The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, and has for 25 years been a clinical professor in the departments of psychiatry and community and family medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He worked for 10 years as a research psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health where he developed the first national program for runaway youth, the first comprehensive text on integrative medicine and a nationwide preceptorship program for medical students. He was chairman of the program Advisory Council of the NIH Office of Alternative Medicine and he was appointed by President Clinton to chair the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy.

Donald de Laski, JD, CPA, Secretary/Treasurer

Don de Laski is the founder and retired CEO of Deltek, one of the early computer software companies and the first major one in the Washington DC area. He and his wife Nancy are well known philanthropists in the DC area and have served on the Boards of the National Symphony Orchestra and George Mason University. Mr. de Laski joined the CMBM Board in 1993.

Ambassador Marc Grossman

Marc Grossman is Vice Chairman of The Cohen Group, a strategic business consulting firm founded and headed by former Secretary of Defense and U.S. Senator William Cohen. Until his retirement in early 2005, Ambassador Grossman served as the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, the Department of States third-ranking officer reporting to former Secretary of State Colin Powell. He was awarded the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award in 2005 and accorded the highest rank available in the U.S. Foreign Service in 2004 by President Bush. Ambassador Grossman served as the Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources for the State Department, as Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, and as Ambassador to Turkey. He joined the CMBM Board in 2005.

Ann Hoopes, Director

Ann Hoopes, entrepreneur, author and musician founded the first natural foods grocery store and restaurant and the first wellness clinic in Washington DC, in 1976. Together with her husband, Townsend Hoopes, former Under-Secretary of the Air Force and president of the American Publishers Association, she wrote a book on eye training for visual improvement. Ms. Hoopes has been a CMBM Board Director since 1995.

Mark Hyman, Director

Mark Hyman is the Chairman-elect of the Institute for Functional Medicine and was awarded the 2009 Linus Paul Award for leadership in Functional Medicine. He is on the faculty of the Center’s Food As Medicine training program, and Memhet Oz’s HealthCorps. He is a family physician, four times New York Times bestselling author and a renowned lecturer.

Dennis Jaffe, PhD, Director

Dennis Jaffe is a professor at Saybrook Graduate School, where he created their doctoral program in Organizational Studies. As a widely recognized leader in management and organizational change, he serves as a fellow of the Family Firm Institute and World Business Academy, and is a member of the NTL Institute and the Academy of Management. Mr. Jaffe is the Founder of a leading business development consulting firm, Changeworks Global. He is the co-author of several books on organizational change and authored foundation works about family business, including Working with the Ones You Love: Building a Successful Family Business. Mr. Jaffe joined the Board in 2005.

John Jeppson III, JD, Director

John Jeppson was a founding director and CEO of Kinetic Biosystems, Inc. (KBI), where he directed the company’s switch from environmental remediation to pharmaceuticals where technology can save up to 80% of the production costs in the biopharmaceutical market. He has held impressive leadership positions with a variety of companies including a Founding Director of the Vanguard Group of Mutual Funds, where the company pioneered the indexed mutual fund industry. Mr. Jeppson joined the CMBM Board in 2005.
