About the Event
This online workshop will be broadcast at a later date. To receive an invitation to the webinar, be sure to subscribe to our newsletter.
This workshop, “Reducing Stress and Restoring Hope” is an overview of the biology of trauma and stress, including their effects on the immune system and practical instruction in a slow, deep Soft Belly breathing, a “concentrative meditation” that is the antidote to the fight or flight response, and Shaking and Dancing, an “expressive meditation” that energizes trauma-frozen bodies and breaks up the physical tension and mental preoccupation that accompanies fear of the coronavirus.
Presented by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine Founder and Executive Director, James S. Gordon, MD, the workshop will begin with an overview of the psychology and biology of trauma and stress, including their effects on the immune system.
Next, he’ll teach you, step-by-step, a “concentrative meditation,” slow, deep Soft Belly breathing, that is the antidote to the fight-or-flight and stress responses that, when prolonged, can be so damaging to every aspect of our health and wellbeing, including our immunity.
Afterwards, you’ll practice an “expressive meditation” that will energize our trauma-inhibited bodies and break up the physical tension, mental preoccupation, and emotional distress that so many of us are feeling.
Questions may be submitted when you register for the webinar and during the webinar. Dr Gordon will try to answer as many questions as possible.
Additional self-care resources are available on the Self-Care Resources page on our website. It is the companion page to Dr Gordon’s book The Transformation: Finding Wholeness and Healing After Trauma.
About James S. Gordon, MD
James S. Gordon, MD, a Harvard-educated psychiatrist, is internationally recognized for using self-awareness, self-care, and group support to heal population-wide psychological trauma. He is founder and executive director of the nonprofit Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C., a clinical professor at Georgetown Medical School, and was chairman (under Presidents Clinton and GW Bush) of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy.
Dr. Gordon’s latest book, The Transformation: Discovering Wholeness and Healing After Trauma, helps us understand that trauma will come sooner or later to all of us. Trauma, he explains, is a human experience, not a pathological anomaly. In The Transformation, he guides us step by step in a comprehensive evidence-based program to reverse the psychological and biological damage that trauma causes. He shows us, drawing on the latest scientific research, 50 years of clinical experience, timeless wisdom, and inspiring life stories, how we can, as we meet the challenges that trauma brings, discover the ordinary joys as well as the meaning and purpose of our lives. We come to know that our broken hearts can open with greater compassion and love.
