Overfed and Undernourished: Common Micronutrient Deficiencies

Hosted by CMBM’s Food As Medicine Education Director, Kathie Madonna Swift, MS, RDN, LDN, this webinar will explore the link between macronutrients’s and ones overall health and wellbeing. About the Webinar

Is it  true that eating a balanced diet assures you are getting the nutrients you need for optimal biologic function and health? In this webinar Mark will review the micronutrients that many Americans are at risk for being deficient in. He will explore the reasons many foods in our modern diet have less nutrient density, how some diets create unique risks for deficient states; how commonly prescribed drugs often interfere with the bioavailability of key nutrients. In addition, Mark will briefly examine nutrigenomics and how common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) effect functional nutrient needs that can be targeted in a more personalized way.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will understand the root causes of essential micronutrient deficiencies in our modern diets.
  • Participants will understand the connections between 5 common micronutrient deficiencies i.e., magnesium, zinc, omega-3 essential fatty acids, vitamin D, and B vitamins and common mind-mood clinical conditions.
  • Participants will, using the example of the MTHFR genotype, understand how unique micronutrient needs can impact mind and mood.
  • Participants will understand how thoughtful supplementation can serve as an adjunct to a whole foods diet for improving brain health.

About the Presenter, Mark Pettus, MD, FACP

Dr. Mark Pettus is a triple-board certified Internist, Nephrologist, and Integrative Medicine physician practicing for over 25 years. He received his A.B. from Boston University and his M.D. from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His postdoctoral training was at Harvard Medical School. He completed his renal fellowship at The Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Pettus is also an alumnus of The Advanced Program for Conflict Resolution, Negotiation, and Mediation at The Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Pettus currently serves as the Director of Medical Education, Wellness and Population Health at Berkshire Health Systems in western Massachusetts. In addition he serves as The Associate Dean of Medical Education at The University of Massachusetts Medical School. He also serves as The Medical Director for Functional Formularies. He is former Chief of Medicine at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is the former the Medical Director of The Kripalu Institute for Integrated Healing. He is the author of two books, The Savvy Patient: The Ultimate Advocate For Quality Health Care and It’s All in Your Head: Change Your Mind, Change Your Health. He serves on the teaching faculty at The Center for Mind-Body Medicine in D.C. and The Meditation Institute in Averill Park NY.

Dr. Pettus has appeared on numerous TV and Radio venues nationally including the 700 Club, Good Morning America, NPR and PBS. His podcast, The Health Edge is heard by people all over the world.

About the Host, Kathie Madonna Swift, MS, RDN, LDN

Kathie Swift, MS, RDN, LDN, FAND, EBQ  is the co-founder of the Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy, www.IFNAcademy.com, a comprehensive, online, educational program for dietitians interested in functional medicine.

CMBM Food As Medicine faculty and director Kathie Madonna SwiftShe received her Master of Science  in Nutrition from Arizona State University and has held diverse positions throughout her career. Kathie pioneered innovative nutrition programs at Canyon Ranch Health Resorts, Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, Dr. Mark Hyman’s UltraWellness Center and continues to consult at all three organizations today.

Notable in her dietetic career, Kathie has served as the Education Director for the Center for Mind Body Medicine’s highly acclaimed “Food As Medicine” professional training program for almost two decades. She is a contributing author for medical textbooks including  Integrative Gastroenterology  and  Integrative Women’s Health published by Oxford University Press and the clinical nutrition textbook  Krause’s Food & Nutrition Care Process.  She  serves on the Advisory Board for Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal and the Integrative Healthcare Symposium. Kathie is a scientific reviewer for  Military Medicine  and was a founding member of the Nutrition Advisory Board for the Institute for Functional Medicine.

For her many years of service and dedication to advancing the field of integrative and functional medicine, Kathie received the first Visionary Leadership Award and more recently, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine Dietetic Practice Group.
