Dean Ornish quote about heart disease

When people ask me for the most persuasive proof of the power of nutrition to heal, I reply with a question: did you know that Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease through diet and lifestyle is covered by Medicare?

Medicare vetted the program for 17 years before deciding to cover it for patients, under a new category entitled “intensive cardiac rehabilitation” — the first time Medicare has covered an integrative medicine program.

How’s that for proof? Not just “prevention” but “rehabilitation.”

According to Dr. Ornish’s Preventative Medicine Research Institute Website (PMRI), this is “… the only program scientifically proven to reverse heart disease currently offered in hospitals, clinics, and physician offices that Medicare and other private insurance companies are covering.”

We believe that eating a healthy diet, exercising your body, and caring for yourself with meditation or other de-stressing methods are the golden keys for a healthy life, coupled with love and connection with spirit and community. These are the fundamentals we teach and the basis for what is now being referred to as “Lifestyle Medicine,” an excellent descriptor of a new way of thinking about our health.

The new way involves learning self-care. Our founder and director, Dr. James Gordon and Dr. Ornish are both pioneers in this modern health movement. And we’re so delighted that Dr. Ornish will be joining us at both of our upcoming professional training programs in the San Francisco Bay Area this year. On Sunday, October 6, 2013, Dr. Ornish will be offering a public talk, “The Power of Lifestyle Changes & Love”.
